Out to Dry

Out to Dry features an 8ft x 5ft oil painting of an industrial fishing trawler hung on the wall behind an arrangement of nets, which obscure the view of the painting. These nets are suspended in mid-air from rusty hand-smithed steel hooks encrusted with sea salt. Onto these nets are hung by clothespins over 50 unique ceramic fish.

The installation is inspired by the continued industrial overfishing of mackerel despite scientific evidence that the population of this species is collapsing. The artwork emphasizes this particular scenario and the ocean in general as a metaphor for way that humans experience nature and exploit its resources.
